New this year at O-Ringen: Field hospitals at every stage

Since the nearest hospital is 100 km away in Östersund, they have chosen to test a new approach to emergency care at this year's O-Ringen. Throughout the week, Region Jämtland-Härjedalen has built up a small field hospital with several examination rooms and portable X-rays.

"Yesterday we had 44 patients and of these, 43 patients were fully treated. We X-rayed four people, two were plastered and one person was sent by ambulance to the hospital in Östersund, but it was more related to cardiovascular disease," says Ylva Drevstad, project manager.

On Sunday evening, the stage hospital had contact with the health centre in Åre. They hadn't had any patients who had been on O-Ringen, so it seems that most people who needed medical care got the help they needed on site.

We are very pleased with the premises here in Trillevallen. It has been easy to build several examination rooms and deploy the X-ray equipment. Today, everything will be taken down and then rebuilt in Järpen. We'll be in a garage there, which will probably be a little more challenging but it will work out well," says Drevstad.

Initially, the region had wanted to set up a big tent, but the staff wanted something else.

"We want physical buildings. Then you can easily put up walls to build examination rooms. It is also easier when you have to store things", Drevstad says.

Under the O-ring, there is a team of thirteen people working, twelve healthcare professionals and an administrator. The doctors come from Åre health centre and they have, among other things, worked with the World Cup races in Åre and Vasaloppet. Furthermore, there is a radiologist who is responsible for the mobile X-ray, as well as some nurses, assistant nurses and plaster technicians.

It is important that we work in teams and solve the problems that arise. It is not possible to say that "this is not how I usually do where I work", but you have to like the situation and work based on the conditions that exist.

For Region Jämtland-Härjedalen this is as a way to develop healthcare. In some other regions, for example, they have started by having mobile X-ray equipment so that you can go out to special housing and X-ray the patient on site instead of taking the patient to the hospital. This way of working can also be part of developing healthcare if something happens in society that makes it necessary to set up a field hospital.

It's not just O-Ringen that's going on in Jämtland this week. In Östersund it is "Yran week". This weekend, Krogstråket opened and the Yran week culminates with Storsjöyran next weekend. "Västgård Game Fair" takes place in Kall the same weekend and this weekend a mountain marathon was conducted in Helags with over 400 participants.

This puts great pressure on the healthcare system and the region has gone into staff mode and they have daily meetings to allocate resources in the best way.

In Region Jämtland-Härjedalen, they have trained for different crisis scenarios, such as traffic accidents, forest fires, outbreaks of gastroenteritis. It also collaborates with the healthcare system in Trøndelag in Norway, which has access to large helicopters that can transport many people. There is also cooperation with the Home Guard and mountain rescue can be called in if something happens in inaccessible terrain.
