O-Ringen has been certified as a Sustainable Event according to Greentime’s standard. The certification is the result of a long-term, systematic approach to sustainability that has been an integral part of O-Ringen’s planning and delivery for many years.

"As the world's largest orienteering event, we want to lead the way in sustainability. Being certified by Greentime once again confirms that we are on the right track, while also reminding us that sustainability is an ongoing journey," says Mikael Jansson, Event Director of O-Ringen.

Each year, O-Ringen brings together tens of thousands of participants, volunteers, and visitors. At the same time, the event moves between different host cities across Sweden, placing high demands on collaboration, planning, and sustainability. To achieve certification, event organizers must meet 41 mandatory criteria, attain at least 70 percent of the total score in Greentime's sustainability assessment tool, and undergo an independent third-party audit. The certification covers environmental, social, and economic aspects, ranging from transport and resource efficiency to accessibility, safety, working conditions, and local community development.

"O-Ringen has been working with sustainability for many years, and it shows. What impresses me is not a single initiative, but the organization's ability to maintain a consistently high standard year after year, despite the event being held in new locations with different local conditions. Sustainability is fully integrated into the organization and embedded throughout the entire event," says Simon Strandvik, CEO of Greentime.

As part of the certification, O-Ringen's sustainability work is presented openly and transparently on Greentime's website. The aim is to build trust among participants, partners, sponsors, and other stakeholders, while also contributing to knowledge sharing across the events industry.

O-Ringen demonstrates that it is possible to combine a world-class participant experience with a structured and ambitious approach to sustainability. O-Ringen Gothenburg 2026 will take place from 19–25 July 2026. As part of the certification process, an on-site audit will be conducted during the event to complement the digital assessment that has already been completed.
