Retro Vibes in Sjumilaskogen

Smart micro route choices shaped Stage 4 in Biskopsgården
After the spectator-friendly atmosphere in Slottsskogen, competitors returned to classic forest orienteering as Stage 4 of O-Ringen took place in Sjumilaskogen, Biskopsgården. But Friday offered more than technical challenges. With a retro theme at the arena, vintage club jerseys, colourful headbands and classic orienteering outfits from past decades appeared alongside today's modern racing gear.
The arena was located on the football fields next to Nya Skolan in Länsmansgården, while the courses wound through the hilly terrain around Svarte Mosse. Following Thursday's urban-style orienteering, the contrast was clear as runners once again tested themselves in the West Swedish forest – an area that, until 1658, lay close to the historic border between Sweden and Norway.
This time, success depended less on long route choices and more on making the right decisions throughout the course. The course planners' advice ahead of the stage was clear: competitors who dared to go straight while identifying the smartest micro route choices would have the greatest chance of success. The terrain offered many areas with good visibility and fast running, particularly in the north-south direction, rewarding runners who could read the map at speed.

For many competitors, it became a stage where technical precision was every bit as important as running speed. Even small mistakes could prove costly ahead of Saturday's final chasing start, when the overall O-Ringen standings will be decided.
The retro theme also added a special atmosphere to the day. Participants had the opportunity to pose for photos in classic orienteering clothing, and many had brought old club uniforms out of storage. It gave Stage 4 a nostalgic flavour that was appreciated by both competitors and spectators.
Now only one stage remains of O-Ringen 2026. After four days featuring everything from the forests of Ale and Bohus Fortress to Slottsskogen and Sjumilaskogen, the week will be decided in Saturday's chasing start.
