High economic impact from tourism

O-Ringen attracted 23,000 unique visitors to Gothenburg last summer, generating an economic impact of SEK 185.1 million for the city.

A total of just over 23,000 unique tourists visited Gothenburg in connection with O-Ringen, of whom 95% were visitors travelling from outside the region. Of the total tourism-related economic impact of SEK 185.1 million, SEK 178.3 million was generated by visitors who cited O-Ringen as their primary reason for visiting.

-We can see from this study that O-Ringen Gothenburg lived up to the high expectations that both we and our participants had for the event – namely, that O-Ringen Gothenburg would deliver an unforgettable week of orienteering and experiences that would stay with people long after the final finish, says Karin Kullman, Project Manager for O-Ringen Gothenburg.

Tourism-related economic turnover by visitor group

  • Swedish tourists: approximately SEK 110.9 million
  • Nordic tourists: approximately SEK 26.7 million
  • Other countries: approximately SEK 47.5 million

Spending patterns

  • The largest expenditure categories were accommodation, restaurants and cafés, and food and convenience stores.
  • 91% of the tourists participated in multiple activities, such as dining at restaurants, experiencing nature, shopping and visiting attractions.

Finally, the tourism-related economic turnover increased by approximately 40% compared with the previous year, driven by more tourists, longer stays and a higher number of international participants.
